Does Pique take part in the World Cup after retiring?

The decision to retire Barcelona’s Gerard Pique remains a major shock to Spanish football officials and coaches, especially as it came in the middle of the season and after recent criticism of the player.

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez had spoken and said Pique’s decision was a surprise to him, and the same for former Blaugrana and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

Spanish federation president Luis Robles commented on Gerard Pique’s surprise retirement before the World Cup in mid-November that it was a shocking surprise for him.

“I respect Gerard Pique’s decision, he has done a lot for Spanish football, the national team, and Barcelona, and he certainly has studied it well,” Robles said in remarks to Mundo Deportivo.

He added: “About Pique’s participation in the World Cup,

this is about manager Luis Enrique, because the list is confidential and it’s just for the team, and it’s hard to talk about it at the moment.”

He continued: “If Luis Enrique decides to call Pique for the World Cup, that would be very good, and I would love the coach’s decision at the end.”

He concluded: “I have witnessed many criticisms and boos towards Pique in recent times, which is sad, but the same person will ask Pique to do better if he is involved with Spain in the next World Cup.”
